I'm running on an older 2nd-Gen mac air (the first model with SSDs) and it runs just fine on whatever the default detail level is. Captains Quarters are painful so I turn that off, but actually flying / fighting is fine.

Bingo - solved it. Bogus file in /Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/Resources/cache/mac_launcherinfoTQ_inc.txt remove that and I can log in. GB - old-time (like, since V7) unix / python hacker.
